Best-in-Class Golf Courses Near Coconut Grove

From Four Seasons Private Residences Coconut Grove, three golf courses fall easily within range: Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne, Biltmore Golf Course, and Miami Beach Golf Club. Each course has its own character, shaped by design, history, and playing style. Set in one of Miami’s most established neighborhoods, these Coconut Grove Residences serve as a calm, central base from which to reach them.

Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne | 6700 Crandon Boulevard

Crandon Golf opened in 1972 under the name The Links at Key Biscayne, a collaboration between designers Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge. Its 1993 redesign added updated greens and bunkers, but the layout still reflects the original challenge: mangrove-laced water carries, tightly shaped fairways, and a par-5 opener that demands precision from the start. Located on the northern end of Key Biscayne inside Crandon Park — a 900-acre preserve that also includes a marina, tennis center, and nature trails — the course is just a 10-minute drive from downtown Miami yet feels geographically and atmospherically removed. It remains the only public course with waterfront access on Biscayne Bay. Crandon served as a Senior PGA Tour stop for nearly two decades, hosting legends like Lee Trevino and Gary Player, and is still considered one of Florida’s toughest public tracks. Golfers praise the shot variety, saltwater hazards, and unpredictable wildlife, including iguanas, raccoons, and the occasional crocodile. The shoreline trees obstruct much of the direct bay view, but the setting still manages to feel quietly dramatic.

Biltmore Golf Course | 1210 Anastasia Avenue

Designed in 1925 by Donald Ross as part of Coral Gables’ original City Beautiful plan, the layout of the Biltmore Golf Course still reflects that early vision. Adjacent to the Biltmore Hotel — an architectural landmark modeled on the Giralda tower in Seville — the course was restored in 2007 using Ross’s original drawings and aerials. The course opened in 1926 with an exhibition match featuring Bobby Jones and Tommy Armour, and went on to host the Miami-Biltmore Open, once among the highest-paying tournaments in professional golf. The result today is a public, par-71 course with 419 Bermuda fairways, 84 classic bunkers, and Tif-Eagle greens that hold up to tournament play. The routing feels deliberate rather than showy, with tree-lined corridors and subtle elevation changes guiding shotmaking. The University of Miami women’s team trains here, the Jim McLean Golf School at the Biltmore Hotel draws players from across the country, and tee times remain accessible to both hotel guests and the general public.

Miami Beach Golf Club | 2301 Alton Road

The most overtly urban of the three, Miami Beach Golf Club is set just off Alton Road in the Bayshore neighborhood. It is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the west and the Atlantic a few blocks east. Opened in 1923 as Bayshore Golf Course, it was part of entrepreneur Carl Fisher’s plan to lure cold-climate elites to Miami Beach and briefly served as a military training ground during World War II. The current layout comes from a 2002 overhaul by Arthur Hills, who transformed the aging municipal track into a tightly managed, paspalum-grassed course with elevated greens, strategic doglegs, and just enough water to keep players cautious. The par-72 routing favors confident iron play and disciplined course management, particularly around the green complexes, which are firm, fast, and built to hold pace even in the coastal climate. The South Beach International Amateur has made the club its home, drawing top-ranked players each winter and giving the course a visible competitive rhythm. Despite that, it stays grounded — public tee times are available, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the location makes it one of the few walkable courses in a major U.S. city.
